Chaplin in the Sound Era: An Analysis of the Seven Talkies, by Eric L. Flom

Though Charles Chaplin is commonly remembered as a silent film comedian, it is not widely recalled that he continued to make movies long after the introduction of sound. His sound films have often been overlooked by historians, despite the fact that in these films the essential character of Chaplin more overtly asserted itself in his screen images than in his earlier silent work. Each of Chaplin's seven sound films--City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940), Monsieur Verdoux (1947), Limelight (1952), A King in New York (1957), and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967)--is covered in a chapter-length essay here. The comedian's inspiration for the film is given, along with a narrative that describes the film and offers details on behind-the-scenes activities. There is also a full discussion of the movie's themes and contemporary critical reaction to it.

Physical Chemistry (Topics in Physical Chemistry), by R. Stephen Berry, Stuart A. Rice, John Ross

Every chemist should own a copy of this uniquely thorough yet incisive treatment of the basic principles of physical chemistry. Written by three eminent physical chemists, the second edition of this exceptional work is the most lucid and comprehensive physical chemistry reference available. The authors present the fundamentals of the three major areas of physical chemistry--the microscopic structure of matter, the equilibrium properties of systems, and the physical and chemical kinetics of transformations of systems--in a logical sequence, from the simple to the complex. Beginning with atomic and molecular structure, they progress to properties of condensed matter, to statistical and thermodynamic properties of systems in equilibrium, and then to transport phenomena and chemical reaction processes. The book's mathematical level begins with elementary calculus and rises to the use of simple properties of partial differential equations and the special functions that enter into their solutions. The conceptual structure of physical chemistry is emphasized throughout and appendices develop the details of the mathematical tools as they are needed.

This new edition features:
· In-depth and illuminating presentation of conceptual arguments
· No shortcuts--derives whole formulas
· 100 new problems
· New material on nuclear magnetic resonance
· Expanded treatment of linear and nonlinear irreversible processes and thermodynamics
· A completely revised treatment of electrode kinetics
· Many updates throughout
· Several vignettes--written by leaders in the field--that cover topics at the cutting edge of physical chemistry research

Review
"I find the progression from microscopic to macroscopic more effective than following the chronological advancment of physical chemistry. In fact, students usually do very well when they start our current, and traditional, sequence midway. The vignettes are very well done and exciting."--Preston J. MacDougall, Middle Tennessee State University

"This is a well-written, logically-developed presentation of physical chemistry. It presents quantum chemistry first, as I believe should be done. It continues to be (in its new edition) the most demanding book in the field. Most of our undergraduates would find it too difficult, but it might be appropriate for our graduate students."--Hal Harris, University of Missouri, St. Louis

Clear, and comprehensive, and well organized
By RacemicMixture
This textbook is one of the best text in Physical Chemistry in the modern time. Although not a classic, it is well organized and pulls all the important information and problems from a variety of sources. The writing is clear and logical for both undergraduate and graduate students alike.

The worst book ever
By C. Liu
This is the worst physical chemistry book ever used. Luckily, for most, it is rarely used precisely because it is so terrible, especially as an undergrad text. Maybe this is a good textbook for graduate-level studies or, as my professors use it, as a reference text for someone who has a PhD in the topics already.

SUMMARY OF GIANT FLAWS:
- Typos in figures, equations, text, etc.
- Ambiguity and errors in wording (the difference between speed and velocity means a lot in solving homework problems!)
- Math comes out of nowhere with no justification
- Extremely wordy and unclear
- No example problems - a tragedy for use at the undergrad level
- Chapter and section are not listed at the top of each page, so have fun memorizing that Ch29 is on Dense Phases, not Kinematics!
- Information needed to solve problems (i.e. specific heats, etc) is often not even found within the text
- It is the weight of a small child

I would like to share with you a small sample of the reviews of the book from course evaluations from my last quarter of Thermodynamics:

"Berry, Rice, and Ross was the worst textbook I have ever used, in any class, ever. It actually decreased my understanding of the material every time I tried to read it. The text reads like it was translated badly from German--horribly convoluted and unclear. The entire thing was rife with errors--important equations would stated incorrectly, captions to figures made no sense, homework problems would refer to the wrong equations/figures, etc. There were no example problems, variables were poorly defined (you would have to search through huge paragraphs to find out what theta* was, and even once you found the reference you would still be confused), and stupidest of all, the chapter and section numbers were not listed at the top of each page, so that you were never sure what chapter you were in as you flipped through the book."

"BRR was the worst chemistry text I have ever had. NEVER AGAIN should it be used for this course, or any other undergraduate thermo course, for that matter."

"Physical Chemistry, by Berry, Rice, and Ross. Frankly, the book was not very useful at all. It was incredibly dense, not concise at all, and frankly sometimes downright confusing. I feel like some of the problems from this book were more difficult because you had no idea what they were asking than because of the science involved."

"SO BAD. BRR has way too many typos throughout. I hate it so much waj n jhmj, mmmvfhgt bh kh mnhg nbgn b. Sorry, its just impossible to express my frustration and rage with BRR in words. The problems are also very poorly written."

"Berry Ross and Rice is easily the worst textbook I have ever used in college. If you randomly picked a book from the Library of Congress catalogue, it would be more effective at teaching thermodynamics than BRR. It is incomprehensible gibberish, with a healthy dose of typos to further prevent learning."

"The text was awful (authors: BBR,Berry and Rice?). It was expensive, heavy, and terribly written. There were mistakes throughout the text, which made understanding the material only that much more difficult. Nothing was explained well and the limited derivations of equations were stilted and useless. It was really frustrating to have to spend so much money on something so unhelpful and even detrimental to my learning."

The Mask of Benevolence: Disabling the Deaf Community, by Harlan Lane

A look at the gulf that separates the deaf minority from the hearing world, this book sheds light on the mistreatment of the deaf community by a hearing establishment that resists understanding and awareness. Critically acclaimed as a breakthrough when it was first published in 1992, this new edition includes information on the science and ethics of childhood cochlear implants. An indictment of the ways in which experts in the scientific, medical, and educational establishment purport to serve the deaf, this book describes how they, in fact, do them great harm.

From Publishers Weekly
"Audism" is the term that psychology professor Lane, who is not deaf, uses in this forceful indictment of what he calls "the hearing establishment," which he portrays as a colonial power overseeing the needs of deaf subjects.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Written to stir both action and feeling, The Mask of Benevolence is thought-provoking in all areas of deaf studies. In particular, Lane focuses on the differences between the deaf as disabled and the deaf as a linguistic minority. He argues for a more coherent and compassionate society, one in which the deaf choose what is best for them--in areas such as education, politics, philosophy, and language. Specifically, Lane's research is about people who grow up deaf, acculturated to the manual language and the society of the deaf community. He writes again, as he did in his When the Mind Hears ( LJ 10/15/84), of the historical perspective and positive conceptualization of deaf individuals. Lane is thorough, detailed, and intensive in relating the deaf world to the hearing, and he backs up his opinions with facts, research, and vivid detail. As there are no other current titles that so eloquently clarify the differences between the deaf and hearing worlds, Lane's book is highly recommended for all collections.
- Emily Ferren, Carroll Cty. P.L., Westminster, Md.

From Kirkus Reviews
Lane (Psychology/Northeastern) follows up When the Mind Hears- -his 1984 history of the deaf--with an excoriating analysis of the oppression of the deaf in contemporary society. Hearing people, Lane says, view deafness as a disability--but the deaf see themselves as a linguistic minority, feel that they have a richer social life than hearing people, marry each other, and celebrate the birth of a deaf child as a precious gift. After developing these preconception-shattering revelations, Lane reveals the meshes of paternalistic control exercised by ``audism''--that institution of school administrators, speech therapists, psychologists, and social workers that authorizes views of the deaf, governs where they go to school, and exercises authority over their community. Despite research showing that American Sign Language is a natural language with its own vocabulary, grammar, and art forms, professionals persist in viewing it as disabled English and refuse to learn it. The consequences for the deaf are dire: IQ scores can be lowered 30 points by examiners resorting to ad hoc pantomime for test instruction; psychologists administer tests designed for the hearing and misdiagnose deaf children as learning-disabled; deaf youth are ``mainstreamed'' out of special schools to languish in a hearing, English-speaking environment. The audist establishment, Lane says, has promulgated calling deaf children ``hearing-impaired''--the equivalent, he adds, of calling women ``non-men'' or gays ``sexually impaired.'' And economic self- interest motivates the audist establishment, Lane argues. The hearing-aid industry, for example, annually sells $250 million dollars' worth of hearing aids to deaf children, whose teachers require them. Yet virtually all of these children went deaf before learning English, making the hearing aids useless. What is to be done to empower the deaf? Allow them their language, Lane says, and their history and their dignity. Essential for anyone with a deaf person in his or her life, or for anyone who wishes truly to understand two million deaf fellow Americans. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Well written but very negative
By banjoman
The book was highly readable, yet there were some weaknesses worth noting. While the author made very valid points, I thought the arguments were weakened in some cases by a lack of reliable citations. The only other criticism that I had was that in many cases, the author seemed to imply an intentional effort by hearing people to force deaf people into disability. In many places, the book compared the treatment of deaf people to cases of racism and slavery around the world. While undoubtedly some in the education system do look down on others, I thought that the specific examples shown in the book reflect more on the ignorance of the hearing doctors then an intentional decision to hurt the deaf community. With the exception of these problems, I thought the book was well written and gave an intriguing history of the problems facing people in the deaf community.

If you don't understand deafness, read this "handbook"!
By Oliver Twist
As a person who has a congential deafness of unknown etiology, I sometimes put up with people who are either misguided, ignorant, well-intended but wrong-approached, and likes when it comes to the deafness.

This book is absorbingly poigant and very eye-opening revelation of what has happened to the deaf people who are "victims" of medical procedures by the doctors who wanted to claim their fame as "curing the deafness" in the 1700s and 1800s as well as of badly planned and executed deaf education since the infamous Milan Conference of 1880. It extrapolates what is wrong with the deaf people today and what causes them to experience the indignity, disrespect, and so forth from the hearing people. To this day, they are still disenfranchised...

A Texas senator who pushed for 185-million dollar fund to rebuild almost entire Texas School of the Deaf snapped back at the group who thought he was insane to push for rebuilding the deaf institute when it was popular trend to close the special institutes for the people with disabilities. He said this beautifully,"If you don't understand the deafness, back off!" Exactly the reason for reading this book!

A Must Have For Golden Owners!
    By Peekablue
This book is an excellent reference for the first time owner or even a seasoned one. There's detailed information on the history of the breed, descriptions and illustrations of American and British standards, what to look for when chosing a puppy or dog, how to feed & proper nutrition, proper grooming, diseases and conditions that are common for dogs in general to ones more specific to Goldens. This book even tells you how to perform a quick physical on your dog so that you can learn what's normal and what's not, enabling you to identify potential problems as soon as they arise.

One thing that surprised me was a section on blood tests and an explanation of some of the more common tests done on dogs. There's also a section on first aid, artificial respiration, and CPR. Another valuable section, is one on training. It goes beyond the basics and includes an introduction to field, agility, and conformation.
There is such a wealth of in-depth information to make this book an essential.

An excellent book about Golden Retriever.
    By A Customer
This one of the best book I've ever read about GR. It give me a good information on purchasing, training, feeding, health problem, and much more. But there is 1 problem. The book doesn't tell the information on housebreaking. I strongly recommended this book for those who wants to buy Golden Retriever and for those who wants information on Golden Retriever.

    The Golden Retriever Handbook
    By EE
It is an excellent book which provides information on how to purchase a healthy Golden, the breed's standards, how to provide a good care to the dog (hair, nail, ear and dental care, vaccination, genetic disorders most common in the breed and how affect in breeding, how to train a puppy, dog shows and how to take care of an old pet. It is almost a complete book for a beginner and to owners with few years of experience with the breed. I recommend it. However, none book has all the information a serious owner should have, I suggest always to buy several books of the breed to complement the information. I have more than 15 years with Goldens including obedience trials and if I loose this book I would buy it again.

    A Good Reflection
    By J. Rios
G.K. Chesterton once described with mirth the experience of imagining Churches turned upside down, their spires pointing into the ground. The effect for him was of seeing something in an entirely new way, a twisting or tuning of reality that made something assumed appear in a fresh light. It is an effect that Chesterton frequently practiced in his writing, because he knew well that the mundane can easily be marvelous again with merely a change in perspective. This twisting, perspective-changing characteristic is the great strength of Joy Davidman's take on the Ten Commandments, Smoke on the Mountain. From it, I have come away with a renewed perspective, a challenged and changed view of the assumed and sometimes mundane Ten Commandments.

Davidman was the wife of C.S. Lewis and a fascinating character in her own right. She was Jewish, a former Communist, an American, and these characteristics are reflected in her book. As Lewis says in the introduction to the book, "every story of conversion is the story of a blessed defeat" (7), and in submitting to Christ all of Davidman's diverse history is brought into the service of her faith, providing the unique lens through which she views the Ten Commandments. (Incidentally, if you're interested in reading about her life, I highly recommend Lyle Dorsett's A Love Observed.)

As I've hinted already, Davidman's strength is in her ability to take the familiar words of the commandments and tune them in such a way that you hear them in fresh and challenging ways. In her discussion of the second command, to make no idols, Davidman says the following: "The essence of idolatry is its attempt to control and enslave the deity" (33). Here she cuts to the quick of the matter, and shows that idolatry is not a matter chiefly of gold or silver, but of the heart of man and his attempt to create gods that he can control rather than submitting to the God he cannot control.

Or take the third commandment (against taking God's name in vain). Challenging our assumptions, Davidman dismisses the simple interpretation which likens this commandment to a kind of cursing, observing that "Profanity does not insult God--a man cannot insult God; but it does cripple man" (44). Instead, according to Davidman, "what was prohibited was the misuse of power" (44). Not leaving us to simply meditate upon this truism, Davidman takes it a step further and shows how we've taken God's name in vain by applying to our own personal causes the name of the deity.

"If we object to meat-eating, we declare that God is vegetarian; if we abhor war, we proclaim a pacifist Deity. He who turned water into wine to gladden a wedding is now accused by many of favoring that abominable fluid grape juice" (46).

And of course she is right, because the real danger in taking the Lord's name in vain is applying to our own preferences a kind of divine approval. And thus she brings these observations even closer to home:

"There can hardly be a more evil way of taking God's name in vain that this way of presuming to speak in it. For here is spiritual pride, the ultimate sin, in action--the sin of believing in one's own righteousness. The true prophet says humbly, 'To me, a sinful man, God spoke.' But the scribes and Pharisees declare, 'When we speak, God agrees.' They feel no need of special revelation, for they are always, in their own view, infallible. It is this self-righteousness of the pious that most breeds atheism, by inspiring in all decent ordinary men with a loathing of the enormous lie" (46).

Of course, the book has its share of issues as well. The individual chapters feel a little formulaic (story, debunking of assumptions, re-telling of commandment), and some of the examples are locked into 1950s America. What is more, on several occasions Davidman's interpretations are not always on target. She relies a little too heavily on some common, anthropological theories about the development of both man and religion (theories which were presumed facts in the decade of this book's writing) and neglects some of the bible's own witness. For example, in her discussion of the command against adultery she identifies the impetus of the injunction as a protection of property, and while property rights are surely a portion of the seventh commandment, she misses the broader and more important element of covenant breaking which stands at the biblical heart of the commandment. These kinds of oversights serve to remind the reader that one is reading a reflection and meditation on the commandments and not a proper commentary. On the whole, however, the experience of reading Smoke on the Mountain was rewarding and enriched my understanding of the Ten Commandments.

    Who Should Read This Book:

Anyone looking for a fresh devotional meditation on the Ten Commandments, but perhaps especially a minister preparing to preach on one or all of the commandments.

    Other Memorable Quotes:

126 - "We sometimes come to God, not because we love him best, but because we love our possessions best; we ask Christ to 'save Western civilization,' without asking ourselves whether it is entirely a civilization that a Christian could want to save. We pray, too often, not to do God's will, but to enlist God's assistance in maintaining our 'continually increasing consumption.'"

135 - "It is a poor sort of faith that imagines Christ defeated by anything men can do."

    Ten Stars for this one!
    By LindaT
Joy Davidman was an American born poet critic, novelist and Christian writer who later married Christian apologist C. S. Lewis. She was born Jewish, spent some time in the Communist party and later accepted Christianity. This book, written in the 50's, was written about the implications of the Ten Commandments for contemporary society -- and in my opinion, it is as up to date now as when it was written.

Each commandment is explained in the way that only a person of Jewish background can do. She often compares and contrasts our society today with the time in which the commandments were originally given. This helps the reader to understand them in more detail.

The only way I could list everything that has helped me from this book would be to rewrite the book here -- which, of course, would be impractical.

    Where would I start?

Each chapter is full of insights that will make you stop -- many times -- and think and reflect. In her chapter "Day of Rejoicing" which deals with keeping the Sabbath, she points out how people through the history of Judaism and Christianity have taken the Sabbath and made it into a chore as opposed to the day of rejoicing and celebration that it was supposed to be. (It made me remember my own religious upbringing where I was surrounded by a big list of things that I was NOT supposed to do on Sunday.) She ends the chapter with a question and answer:

    Q. How do you keep a day holy?

    A. By seeing that it is holy already and behaving accordingly.

In her chapter about adultery, she is even bold enough to say, ". . . true and Christian remedy . . . is to hold the men to as high a standard as women."

On the subject of guilt she says, "For the only way to get rid of a sin is to admit it . . . the Christian is the only man who does NOT go around all the time feeling guilty. For him, sin is a burden he can lay down,. . . It is the unfortunate creature who denies the existence of sin in general or his own in particular who must go on carrying it forever."

It is rich with biblical and historical information and guaranteed to build your faith.

    You'll love it!

    What a treasure!
    By Nancy G.
This book is packed with wonderful stories and illustrations, a great resource for sermons and Bible studies. Though Joy Davidman wrote it over half a century ago, it is absolutely relevant today. When she critiques our society 'today' (in the '50's), she conjures up our culture in the 21st century as well. Particularly strong is her chapter on stealing. Here we see how righteous indignation over our trying to 'get something for nothing' led her to communism and finally to Christ.

Highest yield section is the final chapter with a potpourri review of deadlines and penalties
    By Marty Firestone
Took the Texas Jurisprudence Exam a few days ago for Texas licensure.

We did not have an 'in house' crib sheet at my program for this exam, and I couldn't find much online, so here is my attempt at an outline regarding study strategy and resources.

The exam is 60 questions, for which you have 100 minutes. All multiple choice with many including "all of the above" or "none of the above" as a final option. You will schedule the exam with Pearsonvue online. You have 3 attempts to pass it, or you're done as far as Texas licensure. Incidentally, bathroom breaks are allowed, but the clock does not stop, so pee quickly.

With the following guidelines, I was fortunate to overachieve, completing the exam in about 30 minutes and scoring a 98%. If anyone has any corrections or additions, please feel free to let me know; I will update as appropriate.

    Overall thoughts:
The exam is, at its essence, a collection of exceptions, deadlines, and crime classifications. Much of it is not well organized by any of the resources out there (TJP tried in one of their updates, but still came up short). As such, I have included a summary that I made myself later in this post. The TJP website repeatedly makes the point that knowing specific classification of misdemeanors is not important, but they test it in their own material, and the classification is definitely on the exam.

    Study guides:
The TJP study guide is the only one available on Kindle, and that is a major selling point. However, there are three main resources that people use for this exam. Each has different strengths and weaknesses; none is complete in and of itself. Reviewing them, I found several discrepancies between the texts, which I have also summarized below. The Zerris study guide is also available for free on Quizlet, as are some other high yield notecard sets. In brief:

-Texas Jurisprudence Study Guide by Zerris and Smith (3/5) $ - This is a bulletpoint question and answer book written by three Texan neurosurgeons, one of whom is also trained as a JD. There are two great things about this study guide and a few bad things. First, it is available on Kindle. As such, you can quickly go through it on your phone running around the hospital or while in line running errands till the answers are memorized. Second, the final chapter is a summary of several of the dates and misdemeanors that need to be remembered, and is the most useful part of the entire text. I have included most of the information from that section later in this post. The negatives of this book are that is has quite a few discrepancies, is out of date, and does not provide much context. Whereas the Galveston study guide is overly detailed, this text is too sparse. The book is available for free online via Quizlet (just google Texas Jurisprudence Prep study cards).

    - UTMB Galveston Texas Jurisprudence Study Guide (4/5) $$ - Written by JD/PhDs; most comprehensive resource that I used in prep. This is an outline format study guide which goes through all of Texas law to an insane level of detail. The major strength of the text are the questions at the book finale.

While the book is about 400 pages, the last 70 are multiple choice questions with the answer key referencing the part of the book that explains the correct answer. These are incredibly high yield, and resemble about 50% of test content -- many of them were taken by the TJP website for their own questions. The only way I was able to go through this text without falling asleep too much was by doing the multiple choice first, then retrograde reading the appropriate sections. Afterwards, I quickly skimmed the text antegrade. The major negative, which is significant, is that the text is mind numbingly boring, with huge sections of text cut-and-paste repeated, and with little shorthand.

-Texasjurisprudenceprep.com (3.5/5) $$$ - This is a decent resource written and prepared by two Texan ER docs. The course is somewhat costly, and essentially consists of a flash powerpoint presentation with the course creators speaking over the slides, followed by 6 short quizzes.

Regarding the course content, it is decent. The highest yield portions are 1) the last slide of the entire presentation which is an overall review and 2) the quizzes, many of which are copied from the UTMB Galveston study guide almost word for word. The authors stress Quizzes 5 and 6, but all are helpful, and can be done fairly quickly a few times. They apparently have done their best to duplicate questions on the exam, and they do a decent job of it, with about 30-60% overlap. With a minimum passing score of 75%, this website can take you much of the way there.

    Shorthand:
    - MHIP = Mental Health InPatient
    - Galveston = UTMB Galveston Texas Jurisprudence Self Study Guide, 13th edition 2010 ([...]
    - Zerris = Texas Jurisprudence Study Guide by Zerris and Smith (available on Amazon)
    - TJP = Online review course texasjurisprudenceprep.com
    - TJP updates = The TJP website has updated its information a few times and made charts of important deadlines and penalties. These can be found for free (at the time of this post) by googling the pdfs.

    --
    Discrepancies:

    1. CME
    - Zerris - 6 CMEs from volunteering, 12 CME 1 category, 24 total
    - Galveston - 50% from volunteering - 50% of category 2 credit is the correct answer

    2. NP/PA supervision
    - Zerris - 3 PAs
    - Internet and TJP update - 7 PAs - 7 is the updated answer (exceptions include inpt, ER, hospice, rural)

    3. Secondary practice sites
    - Zerris - 60 miles
    - Galveston - 75 miles - 75 is the updated answer

    4. How many days can NPs and PA prescribe
    - Zerris - 90 days / 30 days
    - Galveston - 30 days
    - TJP update - 90 days - 90 is the updated answer

    5. How many abortions per year for facility to be licensed
    - Zerris - 50/year
    - Galveston - 100/year (p. 346)

How to Win an Argument: An Ancient Guide to the Art of Persuasion, by Marcus Tullius Cicero

All of us are faced countless times with the challenge of persuading others, whether we're trying to win a trivial argument with a friend or convince our coworkers about an important decision. Instead of relying on untrained instinct―and often floundering or failing as a result―we’d win more arguments if we learned the timeless art of verbal persuasion, rhetoric. How to Win an Argument gathers the rhetorical wisdom of Cicero, ancient Rome’s greatest orator, from across his works and combines it with passages from his legal and political speeches to show his powerful techniques in action. The result is an enlightening and entertaining practical introduction to the secrets of persuasive speaking and writing―including strategies that are just as effective in today’s offices, schools, courts, and political debates as they were in the Roman forum.

How to Win an Argument addresses proof based on rational argumentation, character, and emotion; the parts of a speech; the plain, middle, and grand styles; how to persuade no matter what audience or circumstances you face; and more. Cicero’s words are presented in lively translations, with illuminating introductions; the book also features a brief biography of Cicero, a glossary, suggestions for further reading, and an appendix of the original Latin texts.

Astonishingly relevant, this unique anthology of Cicero’s rhetorical and oratorical wisdom will be enjoyed by anyone who ever needs to win arguments and influence people―in other words, all of us.

"Drawing on his extensive experience as a scholar and teacher of classical rhetoric, May (classics, St. Olaf College) brings together excerpts from Cicero's extensive contribution to rhetorical theory and practice to examine the theme ‘how to win an argument.' One cannot find a better guide than Cicero. . . . A delightful and accessible foray into an enduring, relevant art."--Choice

    How to Win an Argument
AN ANCIENT GUIDE TO THE ART OF PERSUASION
by Marcus Tullius Cicero; translated by James May; read by Simon Vance
Courtesy Audiobook Jukebox - sent from Tantor Media

Humans communicate constantly. We inform. We educate. We question. We also try to persuade. Persuasion is the most difficult communication. We need to persuade. We need to bring people around to our way of thinking, to agree with our beliefs. This need to persuade has gone on since humans began to communicate. Which animal are we going to hunt? How many hunters need to go? What is the best way to kill the animal? Who gets the best parts of the meat? Somehow we have lost the ability to persuade. We now just confront, not communicate.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC) is one of the fathers of the art of persuasion. In the democratic society that he was a part of verbal persuasion or rhetoric was an important part of daily life. He wrote several important books that helped teach his fellow citizens to, “Plan and execute a successful speech in public, in other words, to win an argument”. Cicero has been studied by students of rhetoric down through the ages. If you studied Latin, at some point you were probably translating Cicero.

Dr. James M. May, Professor of Classics at St. Olaf College, has done the translating for those of us who never studied Latin. He combed through Cicero’s many works on rhetoric and put together the most useful sections. He has Cicero’s own words followed by his commentary. The book starts with a short biography of Cicero. The next section is “The Origin of Eloquent and Persuasive Speech”. Next is “The Parts of Rhetoric or Activities of the Orator”. The rest is “The Value of Imitating Good Models of Speech”, “The Value of Writing to Prepare Effective Speaking”, “The Requirements and Education of the Ideal Speaker” and finally “A Ciceronian Cheat Sheet for Effective Speaking.” That is the end of the audio book. The physical book also has a section that shows the Latin text that was translated to create the book. It also contains Further Reading and Glossary sections.

Simon Vance was fantastic as always. His pronunciation was crystal clear. His pacing was wonderful. I did not miss a single word because his reading was smooth and consistent.

I was interested in this title because I believe it can help improve my writing of reviews by teaching me to better construct my arguments. I was also interested to educate myself on Rhetoric to better understand what my son, who is a graduate student at Miami University of Ohio in Rhetoric and Composition, is talking about when he tries to explain his master's thesis to me. The audiobook was great to listen to but I felt like I needed to take notes. Having essential tremor precludes note taking. Having the physical or Kindle book, I could have highlighted the passages I felt I would need to reference often. What I did do was put a ton of bookmarks with a short description for each book mark like “cheat sheet” or “argument arrangement”.

I would recommend this audiobook. At three hours running time, it can be listened to during commutes or while doing other tasks. Simon Vance’s voice is so pleasing that listening to it repetitively would be enjoyable. If you can take notes, you will probably only need to listen to it once but you will want to listen to it again and again.

An ancient premise on effective public speaking.
    By Gene Brosius
This is a very good abridged version on Cicero's writings regarding public speaking and his philosophical arguments on social and professional matters. I would recommend it as a starter prior to reading some of his original ancient manuscripts. .
