Such a great story, but.........!!!
By T. Goodman
Oh my! This was such a good book. I did not want to put it down. Such a heart wrenching story. I was going to give it 5 stars, but the book ended so abruptly. In two paragraphs it just ended. It was like the author was told to write so many pages and she got to that page and just had to finish. I was so puzzled as to why Ms Costeloe finished it like she did. I even looked around to see if it all downloaded onto my kindle. From reviews of her other books, she has ended them very abruptly. I wanted to read more of her books, because I really like her writing. But, I don't like to be frustrated with endings like that. So sad, I really liked the book.

I do not understand why this author stops her books mid-story with no ending. I loved this story and was convinced it was going to be one of my new favorites until it just stopped. No resolution. No ending. Just stopped.
I doubled check my ebook, yep that's the end.
The Sister of St. Croix was the same way. Only at least she tacked on a future moment. But it felt too tacked on.
I was prepared to give this 5 stars until I realized the book isn't finished.

Unsatisfactory Ending to an Otherwise Good book
By pegeen
This book is a puzzle: totally intriguing and engrossing until the very end at which point it absolutely falls apart. I don't think I have ever read such a disappointing ending. Why did you do that Ms Costeloe, did you become bored with your novel? It needs two more chapters at least: one showing how the 4 year old twins got to England unaccompanied on the kindertransport and one showing how Ruth got out. And Helga deserved more than a sentence merely telling the reader she died. How? When? Who took care of the twins afterward? How did Edith arrange things afterward? The detail in the rest of the book was precise and convincing and then you simply let your novel fall apart. I would have developed the German character Peter as a vehicle for helping the twins and Ruth get out. But-you needed something! I gave the book three stars but would have given it five if you had written an ending with the same energy and detail as the rest of the book.
