Felix Brewer is a shady businessman who's in trouble with the law. He's had his share of lovers and a long-term mistress, but loves his wife Bambi and three daughters dearly.

When the police start to close in, Felix realises he can't go to jail and asks his girlfriend Julie to help him slip out of the country. Felix pays her generously and puts steps in place to ensure his family are well cared for. However... things don't quite go to plan.

Forty years later we're introduced to Roberto 'Sandy' Sanchez, a retired Baltimore detective who now works cold cases. When looking for a new case he comes across a picture of Julie, Felix's former mistress whose body was found in the mid 1980s, years after she disappeared.

At the time of Julie's disappearance (almost 10 years to the day after Felix vanished) it was thought she'd joined her former lover in some country safe from extradition, so the police and her family and friends paid minimal attention. Several years later when her body was found however, it became obvious that she didn't leave after all.

From Felix's former lawyer and bondsman to his (now) elderly former wife and grown daughters, Sandy's investigation stirs up a lot of memories and bad blood.

Readable but slight
By B. Braun
This was a great idea for a story but never really came alive because the author did too much telling. We never connect with the characters and that's a shame as they have so much potential.
I enjoyed reading this but was frustrated how it could have been a great book instead of an airport read.

Compassionate reading
By Lone Bang Jespersen
You really get to feel these persons. An interesting angle and suspense to the last page. True life exceeds imagination, once again, and this story is compassionately portrayed. I loved every person with or without their obvious flaws. Could be any one of us!

A CLASSIC FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF ONE SUMMER

Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods. In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity.

Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide.

Amazon.com Review
Bill Bryson follows his Appalachian amble, A Walk in the Woods, with the story of his exploits in Australia, where A-bombs go off unnoticed, prime ministers disappear into the surf, and cheery citizens coexist with the world's deadliest creatures: toxic caterpillars, aggressive seashells, crocodiles, sharks, snakes, and the deadliest of them all, the dreaded box jellyfish. And that's just the beginning, as Bryson treks through sunbaked deserts and up endless coastlines, crisscrossing the "under-discovered" Down Under in search of all things interesting.

Bryson, who could make a pile of dirt compelling--and yes, Australia is mostly dirt--finds no shortage of curiosities. When he isn't dodging Portuguese man-of-wars or considering the virtues of the remarkable platypus, he visits southwest Gippsland, home of the world's largest earthworms (up to 12 feet in length). He discovers that Australia, which began nationhood as a prison, contains the longest straight stretch of railroad track in the world (297 miles), as well as the world's largest monolith (the majestic Uluru) and largest living thing (the Great Barrier Reef). He finds ridiculous place names: "Mullumbimby Ewylamartup, Jiggalong, and the supremely satisfying Tittybong," and manages to catch a cricket game on the radio, which is like listening to two men sitting in a rowboat on a large, placid lake on a day when the fish aren't biting; it's like having a nap without losing consciousness. It actually helps not to know quite what's going on. In such a rarefied world of contentment and inactivity, comprehension would become a distraction.

"You see," Bryson observes, "Australia is an interesting place. It truly is. And that really is all I'm saying." Of course, Bryson--who is as much a travel writer here as a humorist, naturalist, and historian--says much more, and does so with generous amounts of wit and hilarity. Australia may be "mostly empty and a long way away," but it's a little closer now. --Rob McDonald

From Publishers Weekly
With the Olympics approaching, books on Australia abound. Still, Bryson's lively take is a welcome recess from packaged, staid guides. The author of A Walk in the Woods draws readers in campfire-style, relating wacky anecdotes and random facts gathered on multiple trips down under, all the while lightening the statistics with infusions of whimsical humor. Arranged loosely by region, the book bounces between Canberra and Melbourne, the Outback and the Gold Coast, showing Bryson alone and with partners in tow. His unrelenting insistence that Australia is the most dangerous place on earth ("If you are not stung or pronged to death in some unexpected manner, you may be fatally chomped by sharks or crocodiles, or carried helplessly out to sea by irresistible currents, or left to stagger to an unhappy death in the baking outback") spins off dozens of tales involving jellyfish, spiders and the world's 10 most poisonous snakes. Pitfalls aside, Bryson revels in the beauty of this country, home to ravishing beaches and countless unique species ("80% of all that lives in Australia, plant and animal, lives nowhere else"). He glorifies the country, alternating between awe, reverence and fear, and he expresses these sentiments with frankness and candor, via truly funny prose and a conversational pace that is at once unhurried and captivating. Peppered with seemingly irrelevant (albeit amusing) yarns, this work is a delight to read, whether or not a trip to the continent is planned. First serial to Outside magazine; BOMC selection. (June)

Stereotype-free...fair dinkum
By Daniel
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Bill. As a proud Australian, it has been a never-ending source of irritation that Australia is forever portrayed as a land of beer-swilling "yobbos" who say "cobber" and "fair dinkum" rather a lot. For instance, 'The Simpsons' - usually such a witty, clever and insightful show - completely missed the point in their Australian episode. Finally, someone has managed to capture a bit of the character of this great country. He releases it from the shackles of the Paul Hogan stereotype.
This is a terrific read. Bryson has, mercifully, gone well and truly off the beaten track to explore many different parts of Australia - the cities, the outback, the tropics, and everything else in between. But as ever with a Bill Bryson book, more than the destination itself, the pleasure is in getting there. Laugh-out-loud moments abound, though perhaps more in the restrained way of "A Walk in the Woods", as opposed to the guffaw-fest that is "Neither Here Nor There".
You don't have to be at all familiar with Australia to appreciate and enjoy this book. I am, sadly, one of those Australians to which Bryson refers that has never seen Ayers Rock / Uluru myself. In fact, I have never been to the majority of places Bryson visits. It was a revelation for me, too.
Bryson once again recounts numerous historical and trivial anecdotes which, together with his unique view of the world, elevate this book well above the mere travel genre. This is insightful, this is informative, this is FUNNY.
Perversely, my only criticism is perhaps that he likes Australia a little too much. God knows, I'm so pleased that he does. However, he is, I believe, at his best when distressed. Dull and drab places, and stupid, mindless people bring out the devil in Bill Bryson, and have always proven to be useful comic fair. There are elements of that here - his body boarding experience, his views on Canberra, and his trials and tribulations with hotel receptionists in Darwin - but at the end of the day, opportunities to vent his sarcastic wit are somewhat limited.
Being an enthusiastic and devoted fan of the great Stephen Katz, I would also have loved to have seen him deal with the hardships of outback Australia. He would have absolutely LOATHED it.
Read this book. It is a treat.

Another Bryson winner
By saliero
I am an unreserved Bryson fan. I love "Made In America" about the English language, and, as an Australian living in England for an extended time, thought he captured perfectly both the expat experience, and the endearing and irritating qualities of the Brits in "Notes from a small island" . This book is factually correct. That might sound inane, but there is nothing more irritating than reading about your own place and finding it tritely stereotypical or factually incorrect. Bill scores well on both counts.
Bill's take on the Australian Prime Minister of the day (a small, invisible and colourless entity) is a reasonably brave thing to say in a sense - an outsider commenting on a political identity invites derision, but he captures the essence of the man so well.
The other special moment for me is his discovery of cricket on the radio...when all other stations fade out to static, there is the mighty game. Somehow or other, despite writing nonsense words, he captures the rhythm and cadences of radio cricket commentary PERFECTLY. To me, cricket on the radio is as much about summer as cicadas, running under the sprinkler and crackling heat. Beautifully pulled off!
A good read, and for the first time since leaving school I actually engaged with some of the stories of explorers! A wry but never cynical tone makes for an entertaining read. I am glad he pays "homage" to that other good 'outsider's book' - "Sydney" by Jan Morris.
Bill Bryson covers much of the same terrain as the other great US travel writer, Paul Theroux, and seems to meet as many odd or intersting characters. Bill's disposition, however, makes him far more open to LIKING a place, and enormously less self-absorbed.
Recommended.

Very informative, telling you many things no ordinary travel book does
By Rennie Petersen
Bill Bryson is best known for writing very humorous travel books, and "In a Sunburned Country" is indeed a funny account of his travels in Australia. Those who love Bill Bryson's books for their humor won't be disappointed.

But unlike most people, I like Bill Bryson best when he's NOT trying to be funny, and my appreciation of this book is mostly due to the great amount of very interesting information presented.

Bill Bryson amazes you with loads of information about the geology, the animal life, the plants and insects, the history, the statistics, the folklore, etc., etc. The many dangers: poisonous snakes, poisonous insects, poisonous jellyfish, crocodiles, sharks, and rip currents - they're all out to get you. The inhospitable deserts, the beautiful beaches, the huge distances; Bill Bryson gives you a feeling of what it's all like.

The book goes into detail about many aspects of Australian life that are fairly unknown, including the discovery (and re-discovery) of Australia, the settlement by British prisoners, the early expeditions to explore the interior, the gold rushes, the outlaws, and the devastation caused by rabbits and other imported animals and plants. Bill Bryson talks about the many unusual animal species found only in Australia, including giant earthworms that grow up to 1 meter (and can be stretched to 4 meters) and the platypus, a cross between a reptile and a mammal. He talks about Australians and the Australian society, and the situation regarding the native people, the aboriginals.

Bill Bryson doesn't cover all of Australia from the geographical point of view, and the parts he does cover are somewhat random. But that doesn't matter because he captures the spirit of the whole country based on the parts he does visit and the general information he includes.

A very positive aspect is that Bill Bryson makes it clear that he loves Australia. The feeling is infectious, and it makes you want to pack your bags and head "down under" for a long leisurely trip so you can do your own exploring.

If I were to mention two things I was less happy about, it would be the occasional excessive attempts to be funny and the lack of contact with Australians. One of the best parts of the book is about his traveling together with an Australian couple for 3-4 days, but other than this passage Bill Bryson is mostly playing the typical tourist, with little or no contact with Australians. And despite a fairly long discussion about the aboriginal situation he does not ever get into contact with any aboriginals. Why not?

A final note regarding the unabridged audio version of the book, read by Bill Bryson himself: Most authors are poor readers, but Mr. Bryson does a very good job here, almost on a par with a professional reader. Recommended.

Rennie Petersen

PS. "In a Sunburned Country" has also been published under the title "Down Under". It is exactly the same book.

A great read.
By Joe Sage
Valley Forge, Valley Forge offers an intimate look at Frank Castle's relationship with the military. Corrupt generals who sent Barracuda after the Punisher in a previous story line now seek to hunt him with special ops soldiers, who they know Castle won't kill, having been a soldier and followed orders. The generals mistakenly think this will give the soldiers an advantage over Castle.

At the heart of the story is an investigation of the way that various aspects of the military interact with each other. The corrupt generals are at the top, the competent commanders are the ones taking orders and not giving them, and the soldiers are pawns in a game of greed and power. We get a close look at Colonel Howe, a Vietnam vet who leads the Delta unit that is sent after Castle. Howe is sober, competent and motivated through his ideals. But he learns some important lessons as to just where he stands in the military and what his superiors think of him. I would've been interested to get more insight into the soldiers who actually go after Castle. They are most like the Punisher in that they are experienced soldiers, who take orders and know their job better than anyone else. They may be a few experiences short of becoming Punisher's themselves.

The dynamics of the command structure are highlighted by the insertion of excerpts from a fictitious Vietnam book called "Valley Forge, Valley Forge: The Slaughter of A Marine Garrison and the Birth of the Punisher." These text based portions of the graphic novel tell the story of a catastrophic battle only Frank Castle survived. A story Ennis himself covered in the Punisher Born title:Punisher MAX: Born The book is written by a brother of a soldier that died at Valley Forge and as the title suggests investigates the roots of Punisher's actions. The story of the battle is told through a series of interviews with witnesses and family members of those who died in the battle.

The illustration by Goran Parlov is of the same spare, no-nonsense drawing that has been used in previous issues of Punisher. Parlov gets the details across with an accuracy and competence that is laudable in it's near transparency. One doesn't notice the drawings, but they convey the action in frame after frame in a style that owes more to film noir than Jack Kirby. It is unflinching in its depictions of violent battles and therefore often very graphic. Not for the faint of heart.

In the final story line of his run on the Punisher, Ennis restates the case that he has been making throughout. Frank Castle is the both the foot soldier and general of his very own war on crime. He is motivated by a dark force, one born in Vietnam. The Punisher is the fallout of a war that never should have happened, a war that was a crime against humanity, brought on by power hungry warmongers who care nothing for human life. And with out really mentioning recent wars and leaders, Ennis makes it clear that corruption is ubiquitous in the Punisher's world, from the lowest street gang, to the highest offices of the land. Though he is an unrepentant murderer, the Punisher remains uncorrupted, uncompromising and unstoppable. Does that make him a hero?

the end of the "REAL" punisher
By Daniel Walter Cevelin
I've followed the max print since Born, and now it has all rapped together to complete the greatest punisher arc ever created. I feel that ennis really entices the story line and makes an awesome portrayal of the marvel vigilante. In this issue, Frank Castle is being hunted by some crooked top government officials. They're convinced that he has information that could incriminate them all for things that happened in previous issues. So first they sent Barracuda, well that didnt work, so now they sent a squad of special forces to take him down, "alive". Theres alot of vietnam references dating back to the Born issue, which helps to manifest the ending of this issue. The artwork of Parlov is not my favorite of the series, i woulda much rathered fernandez or larosa, but i guess beggers cant be choosers, its still a good read. Its a shame that ennis is ending his run on the series, the punisher will never be the same. He has resurrected the punisher from the dead, I only hope that this portrayal of the punisher will continue on. The Max series is not technically finished but for me it is, ennis paints the picture and i dont think there will be better.

The end
By N. Durham
No other writer has gotten The Punisher like Garth Ennis. Since making the move from Marvel Knights to Marvel's adult-themed MAX imprint, Ennis has had a nearly flawless run on a series that took Marvel's criminal killing vigilante in an ultra-gritty, realistic direction that pulled no punches. With Valley Forge, Valley Forge; Ennis' long run writing The Punisher comes to a close, a run that I for one had wished would never end. Well, you know what they say about "all good things" and such, and while Valley Forge, Valley Forge isn't as perfect a read as many of Ennis' previous Punisher MAX storyarcs, it ties everything together that Ennis has set up over the years, as Frank Castle learns just who was behind tipping off Barracuda in Long Cold Dark, and it is an enemy that this time around Frank may not be able to take down. With ties to his pre-Punisher days in Vietnam, this promises an outcome that will definitely not be pretty. While Valley Forge, Valley Forge is certainly engaging and page-turning, its one big flaw happens to be in the pacing. During the chapters of this TPB pop up segments of a book written by the brother of one of the main characters of Ennis' Punisher: Born mini-series. While this does end up playing a semi-important role in the proceedings here, this breaks up the pacing, and simply takes too much away from what's going on. This may not be such a big flaw for others, but for a die-hard fan of Ennis' Punisher run, this hurts the book more than helps it. Goran Parlov is on board once again as the artist, and his work seems more tighter here than on Long Cold Dark. All in all, it's sad to see Ennis leave The Punisher, but he goes out firing, and leaves a legacy as being the sole writer to really get what the character and the world Frank Castle lives in is truly all about.

Anxiety of Erasure: Trauma, Authorship, and the Diaspora in Arab Women's Writings (Gender, Culture, and Politics in the Middle East), by H

Far from offering another study that bemoans Arab women’s repression and veiling, Anxiety of Erasure looks at Arab women writers living in the diaspora who have translated their experiences into a productive and creative force. In this book, Al-Samman articulates the therapeutic effects of revisiting forgotten histories and of activating two cultural tropes: that of the maw’udah (buried female infant) and that of Shahrazad in the process of revolutionary change. She asks what it means to develop a national, gendered consciousness from diasporic locals while staying committed to the homeland.
Al-Samman presents close readings of the fiction of six prominent authors whose works span over half a century and define the current status of Arab diaspora studies―Ghada al-Samman, Hanan al-Shaykh, Hamida al-Na‘na‘, Hoda Barakat, Samar Yazbek, and Salwa al-Neimi. Exploring the journeys in time and space undertaken by these women, Anxiety of Erasure shines a light on the ways in which writers remain participants in their homelands’ intellectual lives, asserting both the traumatic and the triumphant aspects of diaspora. The result is a nuanced Arab women’s poetic that celebrates rootlessness and rootedness, autonomy and belonging.

Review
Anxiety of Erasure marks a step forward in feminist critique of Arab women’s writings. In juxtaposing the traumas of wa’d, or pre-Islamic female infanticide, with the Lebanese Civil War, al-Samman has linked Arab women’s erasure, and especially fear of literary erasure, across time. Her close readings of these novels and short stories are original and perceptive, suggesting a novel approach to Arab women writers and diaspora as a cosmopolitan site of literary production. (miriam cooke, professor of Asian and Middle Eastern studies, Duke University)

Al-Samman’s analysis is lucid and textually rich. . . . A vital contribution to the understudied field of Arab women’s narrative. (Mushin al-Musawi, professor of comparative and Arabic studies, Columbia University)

About the Author
Hanadi Al-Samman is associate professor of Arabic language and literature in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Virginia.

From the Back Cover
"It is a pleasure to welcome Brotzman's work in its updated form. There is no better introduction to the field of Old Testament manuscripts and their text-critical study. It is ideal for the student with little or no background."
--Richard S. Hess, Denver Seminary

"Brotzman's introduction has been a helpful guide for over two decades. His collaboration with Tully in this new edition ensures that the volume will continue to be useful as an entrée into the bewildering world of Old Testament textual criticism. I am pleased to see that the new edition refines the goal of textual criticism in light of our current understanding of textual composition and transmission in antiquity."
--Bill T. Arnold, Asbury Theological Seminary

"This updated version of Brotzman's original work provides a welcome introduction to Old Testament textual criticism that is well informed by recent scholarship. Incorporating current theories and analyzing newly developed resources, Brotzman and Tully's judicious work gives students a firm foundation for understanding textual criticism in its unique Old Testament environment and for practicing it responsibly."
--John H. Walton, Wheaton College

"This introduction to Old Testament textual criticism has been expanded and updated throughout without sacrificing readability and the practical features that have made it a popular seminary textbook. The complicated and evolving theories on the textual history of the Old Testament are explained clearly, while the new appendix discussing the goal of textual criticism allows the authors to avoid oversimplifying the issues. The chapter introducing BHS has been expanded to include BHQ and compares their textual apparatuses. Such updates will enable this textbook to serve the next generation of seminary students."
--John A. Cook, Asbury Theological Seminary

"This practical book shows readers how to take first steps in the practice of Old Testament textual criticism and how it is relevant to exegesis. The authors present a comprehensive yet readable survey of the transmission history of the Old Testament text, they show how to make proper use of the standard critical editions of the Hebrew Bible, and they present a workable approach for actually doing Old Testament textual criticism. By unpacking the entire critical apparatus of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia for the book of Ruth, they provide expert guidance in how to decipher and utilize the textual information found there. I enthusiastically recommend it!"

• From the former Curator of Transportation at the Smithsonian Institution • Illustrated with 530 photographs, drawings, and engravings • Includes plans, diagrams, and detailed specifications for model-builders • 665 oversized pages in a handsomely jacketed hardcover or specially priced paperback edition In this sequel to his best-selling American Railroad Passenger Car, John White forever changes the freight car's lowly image. Including hundreds of historical photographs and detailed blueprints, The American Railroad Freight Car establishes the sophistication and expertise that marked the development of freight cars in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Along with an overview of freight transportation's historical importance, White offers detailed accounts of technological developments and examines lesser known aspects of everyday freight service such as yard management, train operations, and the origins of the interchange system.

From Publishers Weekly
The humble railway freight car, "a brawny, toil-hardened vehicle ready for the long haul," transformed America between 1830 and 1910 by carrying the nation's goods cheaply and expeditiously. Full of the romantic appeal of trains, and boasting hundreds of rare photographs, sketches, blueprints and documents, this monumental study focuses on the construction and design of freight cars but also delves into yard operations, rate wars, work hazards and more. In an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of U.S. business, the interchange system permitting the free exchange of cars among rival railroad lines unified rail transport, shows the author. The replacement of wood-framed cars by steel cars around 1890 ushered in a freight revolution and pitted Charles Schoen, pioneer of the steel freight car, against crafty steelmaker Andrew Carnegie. Smithsonian curator White has produced a treasure trove for railroad buffs, historians and students of technology.

From Library Journal
White, a historian emeritus at the Smithsonian Institution, has written the definitive work on the American railroad freight car, at least up to 1910. This massive work (32 cm. high) is a companion piece to the author's The American Railroad Passenger Car ( LJ 6/1/78), and it is done with the same care and thoroughness. The book is primarily technical in nature, with many drawings and details of construction. As such, it is an excellent reference work, of invaluable help to historians, railroad enthusiasts, and model railroad hobbyists. However, the author also includes excellent chapters on the economics of freight cars and railroads in the 19th century. Locating the data for this book was difficult; few primary sources were available, and journals provided much of the data. The photographs give good illustrations of the freight cars and the times. This is essential for historical, railroad, engineering, and hobby collections.

Review

"This extraordinarily comprehensive tome is for anyone who lived through the glory days of rail freight or simply wants to know more about it... A book that while eminently readable will serve as a standard reference for decades." -- American Heritage

"Beautifully written... Unrivaled access to archives of documents, drawings, and photographs... A fascinating account that takes the reader into the real world of 19th-century railroad operations." -- George A. Kennedy, Railroad History

"The American Railroad Freight Car is a remarkable work. Although it features encyclopedic qualities, it is thoughtfully organized, illustrated, and written. As might be imagined, White has conducted an enormous amount of research, tapping a remarkable variety of primary sources... White has again produced a definitive tome... No one knows the subject better than he." -- H. Roger Grant, Business History Review

A truly great deal.
By Moses
There are some exhaustive reviews already posted here, so I won't repeat what has been already said (and I agree with all of it). I will simply say that I think it's an extraordinary value for a car reference of this magnitude. A truly great deal.

There is no other comparable work on freight cars
By Demosthenes
The author, John H. White, Jr., was for many years the curator of land transport at the Smithsonian Museum. His knowledge of the subject matter is encyclopaedic, and he clearly loved his work. This monogram, and its two volume companion on the American Railroad Passenger Car, stand alone as books of their type. Well organized. Endlessly informative. It is very, very rare to find railroad publications that have been written by authors with the level of academic training in science, history, logical argument, and writing ability found in these works. Highly insightful explanations of the evolution of technology.

These books are labours of love, and it shows.

Much More Comprehensive Than The Title Suggests
By Blue Dog
This book is supposed to be about freight cars, and back to early ones at that. It does a splendid job of that.

But, there is a large portion of the book that precedes the freight cars and is about American railroads in general. This part is covered in depth. And, the author is capable of writing from a high level and painting a big picture of railroading that is among the best I have ever read.

Some of these topics include traffic, rates, the division system, interchange of cars, union influence, and standards. The car interchange issue, for example sounds like it would be really, really boring, but the writer handles all of his subjects in a way that you come away fascinated and saying to yourself, "That really makes sense." There is a story of a town in Ohio that had one railroad on the east side and another on the west side, but goods traveling through had to be ported across town by horse, never by rail, in order to maintain the jobs in that town.

The drawings in the book are very good. I have purchased Car Cyclopedias from various years of interest to me for very detailed drawings on almost every conceivable subject from plans to parts. The drawings here in this book are a good place to start.

I highly recommend this book. It is expensive and well worth the price. This from a judicious buyer, some might even say a tightwad, who always looks for the best bargain. This is the best book on the subject and I can't think of a second.
