Another great Design Works with almost twice the content of the first one

I am a huge fan of Dark Souls and Bloodborne and like the games this art book is stunning. The first Design Works was awesome but I felt it was quite short on content with only 128 pages. This Design Works takes a major step up and nearly doubles the content and has a whooping 240 pages. The book is very well made with a nice dust jacket, thick pages, and a hard cover. Every page of the book has the pictures numbered with a description saying what each is a picture of. Also throughout the book is there is a little bit of commentary on certain pictures of the creators talking about the art. Another cool thing about the book is that you get to see early designs of things. An example is that there is a picture of the entrance to the Grave of Saints and the description says "Grave of Saints (Entrance: Early Design)" and the picture shows the entrance appearing to look like the head of a mouse (I will include a picture) which is really cool and they should have used that in the game. The contents of the book are:

Concept Visuals- 10 pages. This section is just some concept art of various things like a knight fighting a dragon, scenery of a mountain, a knight kneeling in front of a burnt out bonfire, and other various things. The art is very crisp, clear, and very stunning.

Chapter 1: Concept Art Dark Souls 2- 146 pages. This is where the book gets good and it starts out with lots of concept art of various locations in the game such as Majula, Forest of the Fallen Giants, Drangleic Castle, The Gutter, and all the other locations. After that the bosses come in and the art here is amazing. You get to see a front view and a back view of them along with art of the weapons each boss uses. After the bosses you get some very detailed art of normal enemies. One of them is the Ogre which has a designer comment saying "I wanted it to seem almost cute, so I included rhino and hippo-like details in its design". Ha I didn't think it was cute at all especially considering all the times I died from it in the game:( Other enemies are Hollowed Soldiers, Heide Knights, Mounted Overseer, and lots more. The art of all the enemies really is quite something and it really brings out their distinct "Hollowness" if that's the right word. They are very detailed and just look spot on. Next are the NPC art which like the enemy art shows both front and back views of the characters. The art is once again very nice and you even get a picture of Sweet Shalquoir (the cat for those of you who don't know). Finally at the end of the chapter is some art of gear that doesn't associate with any particular character in the game.

Chapter 2: Concept Art Dark Souls 2 The Lost Crowns DLC- 44 pages. This chapter is like the first except that it shows enemies, locations, weapons, armor, and items from the DLC.

Chapter 3: Special Contents- 38 pages. This chapter has an interview with the designers which I found to be very interesting and definitely a reason of its own to get this book if your a diehard fan of the game. After that there are some pictures of various promotional items and some sweet concept art. Finally to end this wonderful book you get a list of all the Dark Souls 2 staff who deserve my applause and thanks for making some of the greatest games ever.

Overall this book was a huge improvement over the first Design Works since it has nearly double the content. The artwork is beautiful, stunning, detailed, and crisp. The quality of the book is top notch and I cant recommend this enough for Dark Souls fans, Bloodborne fans, or even if you just want some "dark" art work.

Beautiful art book

I am a huge soul fans and this art book is wonderful. Anyone who loves dark souls will appreciate this book. I have the design works for the original dark souls and this one for dark souls 2 is almost double the size in pages. I hope bloodborne and dark souls 3 will get design works as well!

Great Art Book

Big fan of the soul series; I've beat beaten Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 multiple times at this point. This book is a must-have for any hardcore souls fan. Has a ton of good content regarding the games artistry, including a separate section for the Crown DLCs.

About the Author
Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 December 1865 – 18 January 1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist chiefly remembered for his tales and poems of British soldiers in India and his tales for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi"), Just So Stories (1902), Kim (1901) (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888).

The Bridge that Failed

This is Kipling's long short story, beginning with a poem, showing how the gods of India destroy a bridge completed according to the best English bridge-building knowledge. It shows the builder of the bridge, his distress at the bridge's failure, and his surprise that he is still alive after the bridge is taken out by a flash flood.

Kipling was like Mulder in X-Files: "I want to believe." But his early childhood was filled with Indian mythology, and when he was taken to England and brutally abandoned in the care of a sadistic woman, he learned Christianity as a religion of fear and pain. He saw his sister lose her mind as a result of her mediumistic activity, and he had dreams that convinced him of the reality of reincarnation. So what he wanted to believe was something that even he didn't know.

It's probably safe to assume, however, that he didn't really believe that the collapse of the bridge was brought about by a conspiracy of several Indian gods and goddesses. But we don't know, and will never know, what he did believe.

The book had a good concept

It is a very good book, easy to understand, the normal mathematic basics are all you need to understand the theory of this book.

He begins with the Solow growth model. It is a static model and can't explain growth over time and the differences between countries in output per person. From that point of view he turns to the Ramsey model. The overlapping generation model is a special case of the Ramsey model. Diamond developed a good model for dynamic analyses. He uses the overlapping generation model for wealth aspects. All models can't describe growth within the economy. It has no productive factor produced in a growth model, like the ak-model. The endogenous growth model deals with it and discuses growth from different point of views. He concentrates on a special model of knowledge. Human capital is introduced later in the Solow model. Knowledge is symbolized in the R&D sector. The Romer model is based on it. The company sells the knowledge via a patent to the market and the rest of the economy behaves competitive. Finally the endogenous growth model is tested. The difference between countries in their output per person comes next. He uses the Solow growth model with human capital. Most of the differences come from other factors. Social infrastructure is a way out and introduces several aspects especially lobbying, tax benefit, rent seeking and geographical factors. The real business cycle based on the Ramsey model. The fluctuations are modeled from the balanced growth path. Two disturbances are modeled, technology and government purchases. Money has no influence in the real business cycle model. It is modeled in the rigidity chapter. Here you have the new Keynesian model with modern fluctuations and rigidities on prices wages and incomplete competition. The IS shock is introduced and how money influences the prices and output. It includes the Phillips curve, menu costs and the Lucas model. The static rigidity model is combined with the real business cycle model. The dynamic stochastic equilibrium model tries to form a time dependent model. It is a Walrasian model with effect of monetary shocks and shows the influence of rigidities to prices and output. In this model the prices are fixed before or during different periods. The result is a modified Phillips curve, the new Keynesian model and a microeconomic based foundation.

Consumption and Investments are the inputs in the growth model and they are very important to fluctuations. The consumption chapter is based on the permanent income hypothesis. The investment chapter is based on Tobin's q and it is stressed against interest fluctuations and tax policy. The financial contract is characterized by asymmetric information. The investor and financier are presented by an equation and the optimal solution is represented.
The labor market is a non Walrasian market, like it is explained in the real business cycle model. The departure from the equilibrium is described with the
efficiency wage. The labor market is a heterogeneous market and there are searching and matching problems. The contract model explains the rigidities of wage contracts.
The last two chapters are a bout macroeconomic policy. The monetary policy is about the right measure to fix the inflation rate to a low level and find an optimal policy for setting the inflation target. The last chapter includes the government in the growth model and debt models are described.

This is a really useful advanced-intermediate macro text

This is a really useful advanced-intermediate macro text, but it contains almost nothing about the open economy. Maybe the United States can be treated as a closed economy as a first approximation, but most others can't. It would be nice to see more attention paid to these issues in future editions.

Excellent graduate textbook

This is an excellent textbook in macroeconomics! It combines rigorous theory, very clear intuition and great empirical applications (this favorably contrasts with textbooks doing data-free macroeconomics and really helps to understand questions and issues that macroeconomists try to address). The text also covers a broad range of topics ranging from growth to business cycles to optimal policy. Problems are very helpful to master the material. The text is also unusually balanced for a macroeconomic textbook in the sense that various theories are given fair treatment and assessment. Highly recommend for graduate students!

Sandeep Jauhar, MD, PhD, is the director of the Heart Failure Program at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is the author of Intern and writes regularly for The New York Times. He lives with his wife and their son and daughter on Long Island.

Been There, however...

I, too, am a practicing cardiologist so I have "walked in Dr. Jauhar's shoes" and for many years longer (30). While many of his points about the practice of medicine, including the behaviors of some private practitioners, are well-taken and well-documented, he makes no attempt to offer suggestions or solutions. As other reviewers have noted, the book seems to be more about his personal financial and family states, and how the world hasn't taken care of him. Most cardiologists work harder than he does (in his clinical academic practice)--They have to see many more patients in a day to make ends meet, and they don't have Cardiology Fellows covering their hospital patients at night. And while the rewards of taking care of patients can be great, don't expect the patients or their referring doctors to beat a path to your door just because you think you're a great doctor. He seems to think it is his "due".

For me, this book picked up where his first book left off, continuing to bemoan his fate and the difficulty of his professional life. What seems clear is that Dr. Jauhar went into Medicine to please his parents, and to try to keep up with his older brother, not because he really wanted to. It seems like he lacks "the calling" and nothing short of accolades and more money will make him happy.

There are many better books on the market currently offering better analysis of the problems facing physicians and the health care sector, and offering thoughts toward solutions.

A more focused approach would have made for a better book.

As a physician, I'm not entirely sure what Dr. Jauhar's point is. I doubt that it comes as any surprise to anyone that there are greedy doctors just as there are greedy lawyers, greedy teachers, greedy dentists, whatever. What's more, Dr. Jauhar's vision seems rather parochial: you can either be a pristine academic or practice medicine in strip malls in New Jersey and New York. Really? I believe there are other options.
However, many of his insights, such as the problems associated with the dearth of primary care physicians, especially general internists, certainly are worthy of applause. He puts his finger on many of the frustrations of medical practice in our increasingly corporate society, but his insights seem a bit scattershot. A more focused approach would have made for a better book.

Well-written, timely, and sad commentary of the state of medicine in 2014

I have been a consistent reader of Dr. Jauhar's NYT columns and eagerly awaited the publication of this updated memoir and commentary on the state of US medicine in 2014. As a fellow physician, much of what the author has experienced rings true. I was, however, shocked at the way the cardiology colleagues in private practice set up shops to milk as many procedures from their marks, uh, I mean, their patients, as possible. Perhaps I am naive, but I have not encountered anything like that in my 19 year career. If this is all true, Dr. Jauhar should be able to earn multiples of his salary as a whistleblower.

In general, much of the author's experience parallels that of all doctors of our generation. You start a career wanting to help people and have a great professional career. As the years have gone by, the treadmill seems to get a little faster every year, the administrative hassles grow, and the paycheck gets a little smaller. Obviously, the doctor is the loser in this game, but the patient is also the loser. He or she gets a physician who is stressed out, hassled from every direction, frustrated, and has less time than ever to dwell on the encounter. Regrettably, I do not see the situation changing anytime soon, and I also see, on the horizon, a large egress from the profession of mid and late career docs, the ones who cared, worked early and late, and understood and possessed the best attributes of the culture of medicine of a bygone era.

Things will get worse, maybe much worse, before they get better.

Back to the book, I did not find many of the autobiographical aspects of the book to be very useful, especially when they did not pertain to the subject at hand. Many of us have families we wish we had more time with, marriages that are stretched and often strangled by the lifestyle, and successful and happy siblings or in-laws that make us reconsider our paths. At any rate, I read these parts quickly and/or skipped these sections entirely.

The author is a very talented writer, and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future. I hope that this book becomes a rallying point for physicians who care to work to make the system better.
