"This primer in applied critical theory bridges the gap between early modern English poetry and various analytical approaches to literature. It is more focused than other introductory guides to criticism, such as Wilfred Guerin’sHandbook of Critical Approaches to Literature (1966; 2nd., 1979) and Charles Bressler’s Literary Criticism: An Introduction to Theory and Practice. Evans (English and philosophy, Auburn Univ., Montgomery) offers paragraph-length summaries of 20 critical methodologies and demonstrates, in chapter-length discussions, how they elucidate some 30 Renaissance poems by writers from Wyatt to Milton (included are several poems by Emilia Lanier, Anne Vaughn Lock, and Lady Mary Wroth). Evans’s style is direct and accessible but never simplistic. Not every method is applied to every text (one misses a psychoanalytic reading of Donne’s ‘Flea’ and ‘Holy Sonnet 14’), but Evans succeeds in showing how early modern texts might respond to a variety of reading approaches. Specialists may find the book’s design somewhat schematic, but the intended audience (less experienced readers) will welcome Evans's concise yet careful distinctions among a variety of potentially challenging, theoretical strategies. From the Author: Inspirations for the Book

The inspirations for this book came from several different sources. First and foremost, the architectural and design community is currently faced with a difficult challenge to design environmentally sensitive, high-performance buildings that significantly reduce our energy consumption and improve occupants’ satisfaction. Since facades are one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building, their designs and performance are an essential factor.

I see similar types of questions being asked over and over again regarding the best design methods for improving facade performance on different architectural projects, such as:

• What are the appropriate design strategies for different climate types?
• How to choose facade types and materials to improve their performance?
• How to treat different building orientations?
• What are the best passive design methods for improving the performance?
• What are the best methods for daylighting?
• How to balance opaque and glazed areas of the facade?
• What are the emerging technologies and materials for facades?

The main reason why I decided to write this book is that comprehensive guidelines which address these and other questions are currently not available. The inspiration came partially from a number of different design projects located across the world that considered these aspects, and partially from my extensive research work focusing on advanced building technologies and facade designs. I realized that a systematic set of design and technical guidelines, differentiated by climate type, location and type of building envelope would be valuable to the architectural/engineering/construction community. And therefore, the writing and preparation of this book began.

What did I consider and include? The book starts with the introduction to different climate classification systems, climate-based design strategies for facades, and review of energy code recommendations for building envelopes. Then the characteristics of sustainable, high-performance facades are discussed, and the guidelines for minimizing energy consumption associated with facade designs. A part of the book focuses on methods for improving occupants’ comfort (thermal, visual and acoustic). Emerging facade technologies and advanced materials are also discussed, since innovative design approaches can be used to improve facade performance.

The distinctive feature of this book is that scientific and technical principles are discussed and presented, while also specific case studies are used to demonstrate and illustrate how these principles have been applied to actual buildings. The case studies include different building types (educational facilities, laboratory buildings, mixed commercial and residential buildings) located in different climates, and cover both mid-rise and high-rise buildings.

What I hope is that this book will provide guidance to readers and help them in decision-making when considering appropriate methods for the design of high-performance facades.

The book includes extensive case studies, located in different climates that discuss in detail specific design approaches, passive design methods, facade types and materials and methods that have been used to improve facade performance.

Daylight simulations for three different facade design options. The book provides technical guidelines and discusses scientific principles for designing sustainable, high-performance facades, while illustrating with specific case studies implementation of these strategies on architectural projects.

About the Author

Ajla Aksamija, PhD, leads Perkins+Will Tech Lab, a center for research of building technologies. Dr. Aksamija's research expertise includes building science and sustainability, emerging building technologies, digital design and information modeling. She has contributed to several books and has published numerous research articles.

PERKINS+WILL is an interdisciplinary, international design practice offering services in the areas of architecture, interior design, branded environments, planning and strategies, and urban design. Sustainable, high-performance, and environmentally conscious design is the cornerstone of Perkins+Will's practice that informs every project.

A book even a layperson can understand

I should say upfront I am not an architect and I am not an engineer. I occasionally like to read review copies just to gain an insight into professions and professional issues outside my ken. I'm very interested in the jobs and practices of others. So I read this book as an interested newbie.

I was surprised how much I could not only follow with this book, but actually understand. The author writes clearly with an easy-to-get style. The topic is an interesting one -- and one I feel is inherently interesting for anyone. There's more introductory material here than I thought there'd be, but not so much as to slow the work down for professionals in the field. A well-written book, overall.

An excellent resource for an often peripheral topic

Facades are not usually treated with the degree of rigor present in this book. The bulk of this book focuses on facade materials (particularly cutting-edge-circa-2013 materials), designs, and strategies for design and materials dependent on the building's environmental orientation. Any professional looking to expand knowledge in these areas or simply keep up-to-date with advancements can buy this book now, as it is a rare source of in-depth information on a subject often discussed on only a superficial level. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Book

This is the very first book I've found on the subject that treats Facade design with an integrated approach, covering most relevant aspects and offering very helpful guidelines and insights into good facade design.

Most books cover only the structural aspects of Facades, others focus only on the Esthetics and a few others focus on describing case studies, but offering few significant insights into the design process and the reasons whay certain decisions were made in the material selection for the facades to function as a whole-building system.

The writing style is very readable without sacricing the quality of the content, and the case studies at the end really tied the whole book together, showcasing the application of the concepts previously elaborated.

My only gripe is that I would have wished for deeper information on a couple of the case studies, and the structural aspects of facades were barely touched upon, but overall a great buy. Highly Recommended.

François Jullien, the leading philosopher and specialist in Chinese thought, has always aimed at building on inter-cultural relations between China and the West. In this new book he focuses on the following questions: Do universal values exist? Is dialogue between cultures possible?

To answer these questions, he retraces the history of the concept of the universal from its invention as an aspect of Roman citizenship, through its neutralization in the Christian idea of salvation, to its present day manifestations. This raises the question of whether the search for the universal is a uniquely Western preoccupation: do other cultures, like China, even have a notion of the universal, and if so, how does it differ from ours? Having considered the meaning of the concept in the East and West, Jullien argues that, if communication between cultures is to be meaningful, facile assumptions of universal values and complacent relativism need to be examined. It follows, therefore, that dialogue between cultures should not begin with issues of identity and difference, but rather by considering divergence and profusion. By no longer simply assuming universality, we allow for greater self-reflection.

This wide-ranging and engaging study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of philosophy and of Chinese culture and society. It will also appeal to a wider readership interested in contemporary thought and the challenges of communication between East and West.

Overused trope fails to distinguish itself

Perhaps this story was a new concept when it was written, but, in 2015, the "possessed painting" trope is so well-known that this audiobook will be a complete bore to most readers. Simple story: Man buys disturbing painting, painting changes whenever he's not looking, painting does bad things, painting seems to be getting closer to him.

The audio quality is fine--no insult in this review is to Saunders--but the story concept is just overdone.
