Very good and still timely

I think the extent of knowledge most people know about Darwin is about evolution and even that is spotty. I just wanted to get a broad idea about the man and his theories and this book fit the bill. I feel like I can now speak about Darwin and actually know what I am talking about rather than make off handed commments with out fully realizing what I am talking about. I recommend this book to Atheists and people of faith since each of us could benefit from understanding what Darwin is about and the context of his theories.

This makes Darwin's concepts quick and easy to understand. This is a good read for anyone who isn't quite sure if they want to take on a more extensive book on Darwin's concepts just yet.

A train wreck

Jonathan Howard's little book on Darwin is a disaster. It is hard to know what Oxford U.P. were up to when they bypassed the professional expertise of historians of science and invited an animal physiologist to write the life of Darwin, but this decision could well have been justified by some practical insight brought to bear on well-known problems of 19th-century biology. However, Howard insists on rewriting "The Origin of Species" as a modern evolutionary text, searching out its meaning for today's biologists and explaining where (and why) Darwin got it wrong. A sense of history, for what it's worth, is pushed aside. Time and place are left outside the covers, the detailed work of Darwin scholars studiously ignored. Even the heart of his book is depressingly myopic: the core of the matter, says Howard, is Darwin's contribution to biology not his impact on Victorian Britain. So all the important bits the very topics that students and others want to know about are missing.

They aim at regulating what has become the main source of public international law and a crucial tool in inter-state relations. The Vienna Conventions codify to a significant extent the customary rules that pre-existed in the field, but also put forward innovative concepts, such as jus cogens. In spite of their importance, these two instruments had so far not been the object of a detailed commentary. These volumes fill that gap, by providing both international and national lawyers with an in-depth analysis of each provision of both Conventions. The structure of each commentary is essentially uniform, with the first part dedicated to the exposition of that provision's object and purpose and to the assessment of its customary status. The second part of each commentary deals with the main issues of interpretation raised by the provision in question. Extensive reference is made to the travaux preparatoires of both Conventions, including the work of the UN International Law Commission and the proceedings of the 1969 and 1986 diplomatic conferences, and to practice both prior to and following the adoption of the Conventions. The 90 + authors who contributed to the book come from twenty different countries and include some of the most respected experts in international law.

About the Author

Olivier Corten teaches public international law at the Universite libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), and director of the Revue belge de droit international/Belgian Review of International Law. He is the author or co-author of four books (Droit d'ingerence ou obligation de reaction ? - Les possibilites d'action visant a assurer le respect des droits de la personne face au principe de non-intervention (Bruylant, Brussels, 1992, et 2nd ed., 1996), L'utilisation du raisonnable par le juge international (Bruylant, Brussels, 1997), Ex-Yougoslavie : droit international, politique et ideologie (Bruylant, Brussels, 1998) and Le droit contre la guerre - L'interdiction du recours a la force en droit international contemporain, Pedone, Paris, 2008) and of more than sixty articles.

Pierre Klein teaches public international law and is Director of the Center of International Law of the Universite libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). He taught as visiting lecturer, then professor, at the Universite catholique de Louvain, the University of Ottawa, McGill University, the Abomey-Calavi University (Benin), the University of Paris XI and the Hague Academy of International Law. Excellent Book!!!

Wow! After waiting *forever* for this next book in the sequel, I devored it in ONE night!! Now how long do I have to wait for the final book?? Ohhhh...the suspense!

This book was excellent! I was completely captivated by Casey and Dillon's plight as they each uncovered incriminating evidence and stumbled into traps and unpredictable danger. It's impossible not to run in their shoes and experience the escalating tension and anxiety as the story unravels...seemingly hopelessly for both of them. But there is hope and redemption woven throughout like a lifeline. It's a riveting suspense book! It also gives us a raw, poignant look into the wounded hearts of those who have been traumatized and are fighting hard to not give up. I fought right alongside of them!

This book can be easily read as a standalone book, but I'd recommend reading If I Run first. I can't wait until the final episode comes out! These are *wonderful* books that I highly recommend!

I read the last page and shook my tablet. I scared the cat sleeping on my feet with my sudden gasp of realization that the book was over... then, in agony I read the release date for "If I Live". March 2018. I stopped breathing. How could that happen!? I can't possibly WAIT! WAIT A YEAR!?!
The characters are real with honest issues. I love to see and hear their struggles with simplicity. There's no need to go into deep clinical detail. As a counseling intern I really appreciated the interaction between Dylan and Dr. Coggins. I want to buy a box of these and pass them out. Between the action and gut level honest pain is story at its best. This is another example of why I believe Terri Blackstock is an all-time top writer, not just in the world of Christian fiction. Now someone make the movie...!

For further information, Dr. R. Timothy Kearney has written Caring for Sexually Abused Children. I didn't say if you want it because no one does!

Excellent Sequel!

Casey Cox is still on the run. On the run from a murder charge for which she is completely innocent, Casey continues to use her instincts and ingenuity to out maneuver the corrupt detectives who are pursuing her. Casey knows that her time and money will eventually run out, so she changes cars, locations and identities once again. They almost had her, had it not been for the private investigator who seems to believe her story. The man who let her go.

Dylan Roberts' longtime friend is dead, consequently he was hired by the Pace family to find Brent's killer. He just never expected the assignment to involve a ring of criminal secrets spanning years of extortion within his local police department. The information that Casey Cox reluctantly sent him was viable, just not strong enough to be considered evidence in a court of law. They need more time and more concrete facts to cut off the heads of the serpents who have framed her for murder. Casey has disappeared off the radar again. Will he find her in time?

Could Terri Blackstock possibly fashion a sequel that would rival the first book in this series, you might ask? Absolutely! Her characters continue to develop, the story line increases in intensity, and the emotional connection between Casey and Dylan becomes a precious commodity, as Casey tentatively opens her heart to the way, the truth and the life. An Interesting Life Story Poorly Told

Hanks has an interesting life story but it is poorly told in this book (hardcover in 2000, updated for paperback in 2007), which relies on a lot of magazine articles and a few interviews with very old people who haven't known him for years. Too much time is spent on insignificant early-life stories from the few people the author interviewed (such as a lot of wasted pages about his time in theater in Ohio), while almost nothing is stated about the man's first marriage and even what is said makes little sense (the writer calls the woman Hanks "wife" even though they didn't get married until a couple years after having Colin).

Some of the more recent material is stuff you've read before, just skimming the surface. Then the author throws in asides, like a chapter on Meg Ryan and her background! What's that doing in there?

This needs some serious editing and much better writing. The author acts like a fan who pasted together pages from different articles he read about the star (Playboy, Entertainment Weekly, etc.). There are no footnotes in the hardcover version I read and you don't always know when the writer is quoting from someone he interviewed or just taking something from a story he read.

Hanks did have an unusual childhood and then suddenly got famous. There were many things I hadn't known about before (Tom was an evangelical Christian in high school, then got a woman pregnant at 20), but most were in public circulation that the author just pulled together. If it's the only Hanks bio out there, then it's probably worth skimming to hear some of his father's words (that the author got from the dad's autobiography manuscript), but be prepared to wade through clunky and directionless writing to get to the good stuff.

I may change my review later on but right now I feel the need to review this book as ok.Be warned that this book really makes Tom Hanks look bad especially in the begianning of the book.He comes across as kind of self-absorbed person in many ways and they ended the book with the author saying that he felt like Tom hides himself from people even his wife most of the time,but then alot of times he gives at times to.Despite what I red and this applies to any biography I read I will still watch a tv show,a movie,or listen to the music of the person I read about.Tom Hanks comes across especially these days at a person who focuses on the now and it makes me wonder if he reads,listens to or watching Eckhart Tolle at all.He is a very kind,shy,loving person to an extent anyway.I thought it was very cute how he talked about his wife especially and is taking time now to be a better father then he was at first and keeps in touch with his biological family here and there anyway.I like that Tom Hank's biography book includes pictures as well one of them included a picture of one of his brothers that totally looks like him.I think it should have included more family pictures now.It would have been nice to see a picture of him and Rita his wife getting married and picture of him and Rita with there kids,but the pictures it did have were good.And the book talked about how he grow up a little bit and also the movies and tv shows he was in as well.So if you like Tom Hanks like I do and want to know more about him get this book.

It was obvious the author did not interview Tom Hanks, but he interviewed many people who knew him at various stages of Hanks' life AND quoted Hanks from many of Hanks' interviews. It felt like a balanced biography, and I found it very interesting.
